Browsing: An Additional Access Method
|
Searching is only one method of accessing information. With automatic categorization, it is also possible to browse by category. The taxonomy used in categorization can be converted into a web directory, much like Yahoo, allowing users to browse the content by subject.
Browsing complements search - users can browse for a relevant topic, then search within that topic, or start by searching and then click a category path to switch to the directory and continue from there.

- No need for complex search queries. Browsing makes it easier for users to reach relevant results, because it doesn’t require them to formulate queries. The search query is implied in the path the user takes through the information hierarchy.
- Uncovers related information. When navigating a tree of topics, a user may find more than just a specific story. Other stories in the same category, or in parallel categories, may contain valuable information that is indirectly related to the object of the search. “Surfing” the tree can yield unexpected treasures.
- Provides a "big picture." Browsing provides higher confidence that all the information on a certain topic is being presented, giving users a "big picture" that is missing in regular search results.
